ASSIGNMENT FOR SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

SSS2 ASSIGNMENT

CHEMISTRY

1a) When coal is heated strongly in retorts in the absence of air, four main products are obtained: (i) What is the process described above called? (ii) Name the four products formed.  (iii) State two used for any two of the products.

b) State the reason why it is not safe to keep the engine of a motor car running for a prolonged period in a closed garage

2a) State two uses each of the allotropes of carbon and the properties responsible for these uses

b) Draw a well labelled diagram for the laboratory preparation of Carbon(iv)oxide

c) State two properties of carbon(iv)oxide which makes it suitable for use in extinguishing fire.

SSS3 ASSIGNMENT

CHEMISTRY

1a) Outline how cane sugar (sucrose) be fermented to yield ethanol. Give the equations of the reactions that take place.

b) Give two uses of Alkanol. (c) How would you prepare ethyne in the laboratory? Give the diagram of the preparation

2a) Some crushed cassava was heated with dilute hydrochloric acid and warmed. A compound B with a sweet taste was formed. The compound B was then treated with the enzyme Zymase, and the mixture distilled. The distillate was a clear and colourless liquid C. The liquid C was then warmed with ethanoic acid, in the presence of a few drops of concentrated tetraoxosulphate(iv)acid to produce a compound D with a fruity smell.

(i) Name C and D (ii) To what class of compounds does B belong? (iii) Write the functional group in D (iv) Write the equation for the reaction between C and ethanoic acid, in the presence of conc. H2SO4 (v) What was the function of the enzyme Zymase?

b) State the reason why sodium chloride is used during the manufacture of Soap

ci) Describe the chemical test to differentiate between glucose and fructose. Mention the functional group in them?

ii) What is obtained when a carbohydrate is completely dehydrated
